...but this one I had to post. A response from Dell tech. support after a call about a laptop that's removeable CD drive is faulty, confirmed after testing it in another laptop and vice versa with the drive:

Dell wrote:email from Dell - hi - as we i explain you before we need erorr code from dell diagnostics where we can justify that the achuall cd drive not working, we are not disagree with definatly its cd drive but we have to chk everything else on sys. reasone why we asking its can be motherboard, can be conector on motherboard , can be diffirent other reasons to the fault. we ask this information for your convinince , if we change cd drive and next day you call with same issue then its bad for us , we want resolve all issue in one service call not in 5 calls , i hope you want that as well.
if its possible call us back when u have access to the sys so tech agent can run all diage to rule out real coz
