In terms of high intelligence the difference between the average humans mental abilities & the average animals mental abilities is roughly the same as the difference between a beech trees mental abilities & an oak trees mental abilities in my experience =/

Hardly worth making a fuss about.

tbh I think the motivation is almost always financial. I did some testing just over 10yrs ago as a student; the vast majority testers were either the long-term unemployed or students, people who can use the money and spare the time to stay in a ward under observation (normally anything from a few days to a month depending on the study).

Lot of peeps I saw in there were 'career testers' - they'd go on as many studies as they could get on (limited by the amout of blood taken and iirc a hard cap no. of studies per year). Volunteers required are almost always healthy white males within a certain weight and age limit (students therefore perfect, the clinic that did the studies I went on in Leeds was right opposite the campus).

Hope the latest incident pushes up the going rate, from what I can see it's hardly gone up in the last 10yrs and, well, the clinics know plenty of peeps need the cash and they don't have to offer much. Was around £400 for a 3 or 4 day study, and £2000 for 3-4 week one back then.

Leeds uni, not the metropolitain. If you know the area, the clinic that did the testing was next to the favasham pub round the back of the campus. No idea if it still is and haven't been in the fav in years :).

There is a fundamental difference between animals and people. Perhaps the difference is due to a 1% difference in actual intelligence (I think it is actually alot more), but we are not just smarter but we have crossed a threshold and are capable of sophisticated reasoning.

It is like when people were trying to make planes. You could have 2 planes which were almost the same, but one would fly and the other wouldn't. The plane that could fly might have only slightly more lift, but it is the one where lift is greater than weight. Apes could never build a civilisation, no matter how long they are given, but we can and have.

So when you think of the defining qualities of humanity you honestly think of intelligence & civilisation? O.o

If that's true I take my hat off to you sir! :)

I think of things like greed, jealousy, self-righteousness, self-centeredness, intolerance, scrupulousness, senseless brutality, among other similar "qualities" :(

actually norc

that describes 99.9% of the human race :p
including me ^^

greed - my eyes go ka-ching every time i see a thread where someone gets 40p for a simple item i could farm ^^
jealousy - yea i admit to that more than i should :o
self-righteousness - ditto
self-centeredness - the same
intolerance - i have little to no tolerance to those who lie to me ^^
scrupulousness - i would class this under honor. honor i treat extreamly highly but all to often its messed up over the other factors :p
senseless brutality - ive whacked someone over the head with rolled up binbags before - hard :p

so as i said :p

All animals are like that. Humans are the only ones which actually try to reduce vices. I would exclude self-centredness as a vice though :), capitalism is the main driving force of progress.

Murder (killing of members of the same species) happens in all animal species. However, humanity has reduced it to almost nothing. People are considerably more likely to die of disease, accident or old age than to be murdered. Very few animals can say that (if they could speak :) ).
