They were just generic comments that could generally be applied to a lot of games, forums, IRC channels across the net. One thing to note is that in some games there can be consequences certainly, but even there you have groups of players or even some individuals who have everything they need in game amongst themselves so don't care about upsetting others. It all comes down to the consequences - on forums there really aren't any, in game there is only if you depend on other people and on IRC channels only if the op cares if there even is one. In places where there is no consequences however you can be sure that things wont change.Kallima wrote:As I said, it was really that I felt some of the things you said were really forum focussed rather than game focussed. Perhaps I could equally well have commented you were replying as a mod rather than a player. When you say things like tough, someone is rude, there is no come back or penalty. On a forum there isn't unless the person running the forum decides someone is so destructive they don't want them there. In game there are come backs. A lot of people keep their head down, don't challenge your behaviour, but put you on their mental list of people to avoid. I have seen people behave in a way that meant hardly anyone would group with them. Unfair to name a specific example, though one is glowing in my mind. I was actually one of the very few people in game who would invite him to an rvr group, because I recognised his behaviour was frustration rather than an enjoyment of being nasty to people. I was happy to have him in group if he behaved, and he made the effort and did.
So, is it ok to say absolutely anything if you use a :)
I expect we've all seen that approach. The most extreme example I came across took this to its logical conclusion. He was a 24x7 game player, and had moved game a few times so he had achieving things down to a fine art. He didn't need anyone but his guild, so he treated everyone else like dirt because there was no benefit in being nice. When there was any conflict of interest between him and his guild he treated them like dirt, so in the end of course they left and he was totally alone. The only person in game he was polite to all the time was me, because he was desperate for someone to talk to and I didn't actually tell him to ummm, go away in rude terms. From his view I was his only friend. From my view there was just a hideous fascination in hearing him chat about the macros he was using, and radar, and what nasty thing he had done to some poor soul. I was crafting at the time, and crafters use a lot of things as entertainment. Even after he sold his account he hacked it a few times to come and chat to me. It was quite surreal and quite sad. I felt sorry for him.Xest wrote: One thing to note is that in some games there can be consequences certainly, but even there you have groups of players or even some individuals who have everything they need in game amongst themselves so don't care about upsetting others.
Having said that, it was pretty annoying the way he kept telling me I was stupid for not cheating, so on occasion I felt more like strangling him than feeling sorry.
true and if your rude for long enough some of us might vote for you to be a Mod. Then you have to start being politeXest wrote:They were just generic comments that could generally be applied to a lot of games, forums, IRC channels across the net. Well, work is about to resume, and the novelty of roleplaying a board bunny has worn off.
In conclusion it seems a smilie isn't an excuse in all circumstances, we don't like paedophiles, we sympathise with oppressed people, and Mojo doesn't mind being burgled.
The internet is a big bad world and us soppy fluffy rabbits who are stupid or brave enough to have feelings should stay away and bolt our doors or the big bad wolves will eat us.
22 people have posted on this thread, and I am interested to see we have (in my totally subjective and random assessment):-
8 Rabbits
2 Wolves
7 Mad March Hares
3 Wise owls
1 Djinn
1 Cobra
I would add something else but Aran would hit me with fish
