Heres one for the real techies...
Being a total Oracle noob I have no clue if what I am doing is right BUT I have followed the direction of the company that I am working with on this matter...
In order to get connected to the database that I need to connect to I have had to:
1. get hold of PuTTY and PuTTYGen
2. Generate the SSL public and private keys, supplying the public key to the other company.
3. create a putty connection to the server
4. get hold of the specific client for Oracle
5. install said Oracle 9i client and configure the service connections etc which test successfully.
all of which went according to plan...
6. set up ODBC File DSN in windows data sources...
easy I hear you say... well ordinarily yes... but on trying to connect using the credentials provided the ODBC connection cannot be established.
I have tried to establish the connection with the putty connection off and on, with the oracle enterprise console open and closed and connected (seemingly) to the database via the SQL scratchpad but as yet I cannot get the DSN to connect.
Anyone got any ideas?

What error you get reported when you setup the ODBC connection, and at which point does it fail?
Oh and just so i'm clear, your sat at your workplace, trying to connect to this oracle database that is at someone elses workplace? Your physical link is just over the internet or other WAN connection?

sorted now thanks matey... seems the tnsnames.ora file needed some help constructing itself properly and as such wasnt behaving itself thus stopping me from accessing the DB DSN.
