Thoughts, a month after release...
The PvE side of LotRO is naturally very similar to WoW. Quest-based play is all the rage with game designers. It's kinda fun, but isn't keeping me all that engaged. Although the repetitiveness of DAoC hunting bored my senseless, it did create a good space for the social side of grouping, which questing doesn't.
The PvP side of LotRO is not great, but does have some ups. For one thing it has a "frontier zone" kinda approach which means you do get that nice exciting vibe of not knowing where the enemy are and having to coordinate groups to hotspots.
Only 2 sides is once again bleh for PvP, and the flow of battle in LotRO seems a bit too generalised. I couldn't really get any tactical depth or room for ingenuity.
With all these games coming and going with mediocre PvP, DAoC's achievement in that area is looking ever more impressive.

Indeed, the community was what made the game a lot more engaging and fun and it was that specific mix of community size and helped, not by a minor role by prwydwe.net itself which really brought out a sense of community.Greggor wrote:I dont think there will ever be a game like DAOC on Prydwen ever again.
1) the Community was very small 300 players. So nearly everyone knew each other
2) Was my First MMO which is always the best.
Daoc wasnt my frst mmo, but it brought out one of the fondest memories, then again it's also the mmo I played the longest with.
I agree that there won't a game/community like we had in prydwen. Purely due to how mainstream mmos have gotten now, which roughly translates to a lot more players which generaly means a much higher number of twonks in the game
-WAR- Jalanteriel - Swordmaster - GM of The Sylvan Blades - Karak-Norn - Order - Retired
-DAoC- 8x50s, 6xLGMs - Sold
-WoW- Stormreaver - -Masquerade- - Retired
-LotRO- 6X Elf Hunter - Laurelin - Chosen Generation - 5X Dwarf Guardian - Elendilmir - EDMW

The irony is, I thought exactly the same when Quake 1's days were finally numbered with the source release that there wouldn't be another community like it, Prydwen proved otherwise so there is still hope mateJalanteriel wrote:I agree that there won't a game/community like we had in prydwen. I thought the same after the German Meridian59 servers finally died.
Still havn't found a community to match it.

turning off gravity would be pretty cool!

The ability to influence gravitational forces within a distinct area defined by the extent of ones body, or a vehicle, or a spaceship or similar would be pretty useful though. I've thought about it a lot over the last few decades & I'm convinced it shouldn't be that hard. I think we're just missing something pretty basic.
BTW maybe we should move this to off-topic

I was wondering if perhaps someone could give further details about this game?
I am kinda looking for a relaxing online game with good pve and without to much competitive and "have to get this and that" attitude to it. And having looked a bit into lord of the rings online, it seems this could be the game. But i also want to be able to solo or just duo, just as well some form of point to the game and leveling besides a good story. What is the end game options for example?
Hope someone could give me a wee bit info as im quite interested but i cannot seem to find that much info on how the game actually is to play and what you do in that game.
