Is it Zerg or Bust for the casual player in RvR nowadays?

Ok, posting this for discussion, not for flaming of those of us who are not wtfpwnL33T, so please consider others opinions and playtime before responding
From my observations recently (Since cluster)
I am beginning to feel that all the casual players are basically being forced to play in Zerg warfare as the increase in High RR guild groups since cluster has prevented a lot of PUG or casual Medium RR (say 3-7) alliance groups from being able to find a competetive battle.
The FG High RR scene seems very competetive and healthy, but I dont live in that world due to real life commitments and not wanting to spend every moment of my gameplay time in RVR. I am fairly sure there are plenty more like me in Hibernia and both the enemy realms
In recent threads on <spits> FH, people suggest that to improve and have fun you need to get organised, be prepared for regular thrashings, etc etc, but this seems basically a dead end solution unless you can find players of similar ability, RR, etc to actually fight against to gain this practice. You learn nothing from getting wiped in 5 seconds flat nor from standing around in a zerg hitting your basic damage/heal spell repeatedly on any target you see. Even if you form a semi organised group to work together inside the zerg you are just as likely to have members farmed by the scout zerg/WL chambers etc etc ( and no doubt Ranger zerg etc for the enemy realms) and therefore not be able to work in a coordinated fashion.
Certainly, joining the zerg night after night will gain you a regular realm point injection which can be sort of gratifying in its own way, but I dont really see the point of being a RR8 Caster who only knows how to hit his main DD spell as that is all he has done for months in the zerg.
Did all the people who would have been RvRing in the medium RR category all disappear off to Glastonbury as they already felt they couldnt compete?
I dont claim to know the answers to any of this and wouldnt presume to tell other folks how to play or spend their time, but I bet I am not the only slightly perturbed person who is frustrated by the general state of things at present
