A corollary to Elmqvist's Law

In general, adding features to an online game that prevent people from playing together is a bad idea.

I think catacombs took a bad situation and made it better, maybe not perfect but certainly better.

For a long time in DAoC finding a descent XP group was pretty hard, if not impossible. This had already forced people to either solo or Powerlevel. I think Catacombs did well at providing the soloers and smaller groups with something they could do that matched their level, without having to hunt through the whole of the realm.

The Aurulite equipment also meant that levellers could spend more time levelling and less time worrying about getting equipment sorted. I have yet to experience DR, but it seeems that this builds on the foundations laid by catacombs and gives people an easier way to get equipped to a reasonable level before RvRing with Champion Levels and reasonable Epic kit.

Ive found it a complete waste of time, except for the odd drop that helps fill out a template. Then again, i can pl stuff if I need to.

Oh and I look gay when I run.

My catacombs model isnt so good either.

At least the fact you have foud it a waste of time means you haven't had to do any of it to remain competitive, unlike the worst expansion (for the game) that they released.... ToA.

Much as I liked ToA in terms of doing the MLs, artifact encounters etc (The first 5 times anyway...) the fact it had such a big impact on RvR meant that people were forced into doing things they didn't want to do.

I really like Catacombs TBH.
The best thing is it's really completely optional - none of it is mandatory.
Lots & lots of new content which you have the luxury of taking or leaving as you see fit.
-
Paddock - L60 Male Man Hunter - SM Tailor
Moegren - L53 Male Man Captain - SM Weaponsmith GM Woodworker
Paddreth - L60 Male Man Minstrel - SM Jeweller GM Cook
Skyros - L57 Male Man Loremaster - SM Scholar GM Farmer
Pauncho - L60 Male Hobbit Burglar - SM Armoursmith
