DL Ventrilo Server and Client.
go to
http://www.showmyip.com and see your IP at top.
tell your friend your IP.
start Ventrilo Client, connect to the IP.
if you have a router you need to setup port forwarding on XXXX port, cant remember which.. and yourself connect to the internal IP, ie. your own PC´s IP.

Ventrilo has nice interface and is easy to configure, i've used it quite alot of time myself and the sound is excellent. Can't remember the names of the other ones i've tried but this one was the best.

If you host your own server you want the following 2 files:
Windows i386 - 32bit 2.2.0 - SERVER
Windows i386 - 32bit 2.2.0 - CLIENT
When you have both, You can install the client (has an acctuall installer), and for the client, you merely extract it into a folder (i.e. VentSRV).
To merely run a simple, nothing special server. Go into the VentSRV folder, and run 'ventrilo_srv.exe' which will fire up a dos prompt window. Minimise this window, and your server is now running.
To connect open up the Client (short cut will now be in your Start > Programs > Ventrilo - Start group menu. Next to username, and server is a small, clickable, '->'. Starting with username click it, click 'new' to create a username, and insert your nickname/name. Ok it all, and back to the main interface.
Next click the '->' next to connect. Create a new server and give it a name (such as 'home'). Insert your hostname/ip (as luz said, you can get that from '
http://www.showmyip.com/gb/' (will be the IP at the very top left of the page)). OK that once the IP has been added.
And hit connect.
