Abit too strict moderation now?

[quote="Banana"]k the discussion was geting abit heated regarding the claiming of drops so all posts on the subject and everything else has been deleted ]

Basically Prydwen.NET feels like turning into a kindergarten. The idea of a swearing-filter; now removing something which might turn into... oh no.... heated discussion ?

Censorship is a good thing..... in 1890 in the Soviet-Union; not in 2005 in our countries cmon.

Cmon now; a forum is about discussions, and sometimes they get heated. As a moderator your job is to regulate that when it goes over the top. Not deleting everything which might possibly harm a 2-year old kitten.

Yeh i agree with you there Puppet, moderating to regulate the flames, personal attacks or general spam is a good thing, but trying to kill something because it gets 'too heated a discussion' like the example you quoted seems a bit over the top and silly.

Censorship is never a good thing, but applying a swear filter is not censorship. You join the filtered group voluntarily, censorship is not voluntarily done by the audience but is forced from some higher authority.

Regarding deleting of posts that might become a heated discussion... well, that actually depends on how the community reacts on these posts. When discussion will only lead to cursing each other and shouting "i am right and you're not" I think deleting the posts is for the better... it just gives a bad impression of the community.

Btw, the Soviet Union was founded 1917.

Maybe it was founded in 1890 and someone censored all references to it until 1917 :D

I don't mind the filter as it is voluntary as you say, and moderation is by definition some form of censorship when things get too heated. But in a less specific sense, I do agree with Puppet that it feels like there is a more of a sense of hands-on moderation now when we used to be more or less self-regulating.

I have posted this to the deleted thead.
Lairiodd wrote: Ok, I have undeleted the thread and split it into two threads. The mods here have been getting alot of flack the last week about not locking threads fast enough. It is difficult to always maintain a balance. Ideally, we are aiming to have consistancy in modding and are discussing a few rules of thumb for how to maintain that consistancy between various mods.

This thead may have been shut down a little to early, so assuming that it stays flame free (no directly insulting other people), then there should be no need to lock it. You are all welcome to state your opinions on the matter but there is no need to resort to flames.
