Irony is, 60% percent of english vocabulary is french origin anyhow...due to the fact the french aristocracy invaded england in 1066 and took 300yrs to learn english.

Suppose u want us to learn the words to Rule Britannia as well? Hell, i've seen Spanish, Norwegian, Swedish spoken on Prydwen loads of times & i didnt see u complaining. Get off the political soap box its the year 2005 & as much as u lot h8 it ur european as well..... plus by my count french & french dialects (4 iirc) are official languages in more countries in europe than english (2 iirc)

I wasn't being serious. I just like to stir things up and really, everyone's reaction only goes to show how very much the different European countries take pride in their different languages and cultures... which is a good thing in my opinion.
The point was really that Esperanto wouldn't work, neither would making English the official European language.
In reality, I'm very much in favour of cultural diversity. That's why I think it's wrong (imo) for Europe to have the single currency, the "Euro". That's why I think it's wrong (imo) why Kilograms, Litres and Kilometres are replacing Pounds, Gallons and Miles. Everytime we lose something, we become poorer for it.
Part of the attraction of visiting other European countries is to experience a different culture. It's a shame that we no longer have Francs, Deutschmarks, Liras, Pesetas etc. etc.
Language is a more complicated matter, but it doesn't have to be barrier.
That's why I so hate all the bickering between the French and English on the Glastonbury server. Why can't they just get on with each other and accept that their differences are what make Europe what it is... a culturally diverse area in which to live.

I agree with what I think you're trying to say, but it's hard to say wether the above statement is really strictly true. Private bankers in Switzerland are generally expected to be able to speak at least 5 languages fluently so I would say that the major business-language trend is currently towards multi-linguality. Some European countries more or less have a 'tradition' of only wanting to speak their own languages, but basically, it's their loss

Multi-linguality is a wonderful thing, & personally I love to see foreign languages being spoken (written) in DAoC
