As with any hobby. DAOC is just a hobby (ok a life for some but let's leave them out ;) ) and you have to balance it all

I think there are 2 real problems which come out of this discussion and balance and RR are not at the heart of it.

1. Getting new players

2. Supporting new players so they can have some fun

The first is really up to GOA, sadly they are crap at marketing and there seems to be little chance we will ever get a big enough influx of new players for them to look after each other. So we need to do 2., which as Sharkith has found out is not easy.

When I first joined there were lots of noobs, but there were also many people levelling up alts from level 1. So getting rid of /level has to be a good idea from that POV.

Me, I'm not likely to level any more alts the 'old fashioned way', and I don't have enough DAOC time to spend it looking for noobs so I can hand-hold them - I've tried it in the past and after helping about 8 people out with levelling and items etc., not one of the buggers carried on playing. Not doing that again!

That's EXACTLY the point I was trying to make.

Let's take our example of Tom Noob who's just got to L50 & ports out to Crauch & gets WTF pwnd. He realises that he's not going to be able to compete without a BB.

Assuming he's stupid enough to keep playing, he gets a 2nd account, rolls a BB, levels it to 50, ports to Crauch & gets WTF pwnd. He then realises he's not going to be able to compete without being ML10.

Assuming he's still stupid enough to keep playing, he somehow finds out about pryd.net &/or FH, gets informed about MLs, gets himself & his BB ML10, ports to Crauch & gets WTF pwnd. He then realises that he's not going to be able to compete unless both he & his BB have 5-7 L10 artes.

Assuming he's a complete idiot & still continues playing, he struggles through his 10-14 artes + 30-42 scrolls & levelling the Mofas, ports to Crauch & STILL gets WTF pwned by some RR10+ Sorc who /rudes him afterwards.

He now realises he STILL needs a LOT of RRs to be able to compete, also he very probably doesn't have the current fotm spec, needs to level a SCer to get an acceptable suit because he doesn't know one, can't get an RvR group because he's not RR5 etc etc etc etc etc etc etbloodyc.

Can you blame Tom ExtremelyF'ing****edOffButNoLongerANoob for giving up?

There are too many obstacles placed in the way of teh new player.
There are too many goodies giving the l33td00dz an unacceptably large advantage.

Would be nice if they reverse RAs. Like as a noob you have 100 points to spend on them and as you increase in RR you loose your abilities.

For all the ones that are looking for a challenge - wouldn't that be the best route? :OohhoO:

I'm home every day, i have my son to take care off. Thand on the other hand goes to work, does more than a fulltime job AND spends nearly all of his freetime in daoc. So you can see what i'm trying to say. He's lucky that I play the game aswell but for partners that dont play the game i can see it getting a real problem.

Hehe, Satyn, tell me about it! There's so much work that needs doing on my house and the wife's always nagging at me... all because I spend to much time on the computer!

Well it doesnt matter what game you play. As long as it is a time related game you will always have these issues. The more time you put into it the better equipment you will have. It is part of the game and that will never be changed.

Now for Tom from your example he needs friends. This is MMORPG..not a single player game. So while he levels he gets into a guild. With that guild he levels or he levels solo in catacombs (which i heared is very easy but never did it myself). But he gets to know people. With those people he can get a template (and imo max 5 arties is enough on most characters...2 extra dex or 20 extra hitpoints that you get with a maxed out template dont make the difference..the player does). Then with those people he will learn rvr and maybe later he can become a l33t dude ;)

Keep in mind that if you play the game for the first time probably the ML's the leveling the artis arent really a pain. I mean i had a ball leveling Quinlan to lvl 50 and the first time i did ml's wasnt to bad either.

Last but not least you only need rr10 to beat the high RR opted groups. There are also other groups out who are lower rr and with who you can have fun fights.

Adiana (sp) actually said that DAOC EU currently still is steadily growing. Dont know where he got that information but seems it is doing ok. DAOC has been predicted to die and doom forever. Just never happens ;)

You are very probably right Quin.
Think I need to take some kind of a break from playing & resort my priorities/rediscover the fun.

IMO if you dont find the game fun you indeed need to reasses (sp). To me this game is a hobby. Wouldnt do it if i wouldnt have fun
