As it happens, in a discussion I've been having directly with GOA on account refunds, I've pointed them to this thread so they can have a think about the points we're making. Although I'm leaving the european game I really would like to see it grow and prosper because it has given me some good times in the past, and maybe, just maybe, this thread could help inform their future plans for the game.

nononono pls dont make all servers english, me and level want to stay the last austrian players in HIB...... :eek3
hmmn seriously there is a big foreighn language problem in some of the former 'big'(1800-1940) countries like germany, italy, french, spain and UK.
a exeption are the little or often coquered countries.
Most of finland people speak 3 languages,switzerland,belgium,slovenja....
dont think they had so much succes in germany or french if they would have only english servers.
As an austrian i must say i really like it to speak in english, to make mine abit better.

One thing they could do is implement a translator program into the existing game so that you could say what ever you wanted to say but it will auto translate to the native language of the person you are talking to and vice versa. Difficult and laborious, but possible. However, game is dying anyway and will continue to suffer because of the advertising reasons pointed out in this thread, end of conversation on this subject really.
Personally I don't think GoA care about new players.
Recent developments would suggest that DAoC will start to be phased out in 2 years time, when Warhammer Online is scheduled for release.
There also seems to be some suggestion that GoA won't be hosting Warhammer Online, and that Mythic may well be doing it themselves.
So what incentive is there for GoA to promote DAoC? They will be keen to retain as many people as possible for as long as possible to maximise their revenue without significant further expenses, not sure attracting new people at the cost of extra infrastructure would be a priority though.

And Alex, I've found that many many people in the scandinavian countries have excellent english at very young ages and it leaves me both ashamed at my own lack of language skills and in total admiration of those people I meet with such good skills.
There is probably no better way of learning another language than conversing in it on a regular basis and that's why games such as these have so much potential. My own french is appalling but I did once create some alts on carnac and tried to play there for a while, but in the end my own lack of skill and confidence meant I retreated back to the English servers full-time.
This is why, whenever I meet non-english people on the english servers I have total respect for them as people and players, unless they behave like complete morons.

Personally I would have thought the incentive for GOA is to build a customer base to which they can sell existing and new product in order to maintain and grow their business. I can't imagine for one minute that they are planning to make themselves go out of business and get laid off so if they have a medium term business strategy surely having a solid customer base is essential to that?
Yes, but by promoting DAoC they would be building a customer base for Mythic NOT for themselves.Briannon wrote:Personally I would have thought the incentive for GOA is to build a customer base to which they can sell existing and new product in order to maintain and grow their business. Their energies are probably being focused more into other areas that they know will not be closed of in 2 years.
I know very little about GoA other than they ruun the DAoC servers, I would sincerely hope that they have something else to their business that they can promote?

DAOC wouldn't have been that success in France or Germany without having the localised version.
As German I started learning English with being 10 years old - only after 6 years more I would have been able to play on an English server - very very badly.
In some counties English starts in school with 12 or even 14.
Some might say that young players are not wanted - then again a lot have different things to do when they are at the age (16+) to start playing with computers.
The English servers in addition loose the main selling point of DAOC - RvR. If the attrition of Mid players continues then in a few months DAOC will offer the same as WOW does now: 2 sides fighting each other - but just one side constantly lower populated with better tools - Alb against Hib.
