technically speaking there should be failover systems and backups... (but we know what the situation is with backups...) its all about redundancy... and personally if my technical staff dealt with the problems the way I see these issues dealth with... there would be some redundancies alright!

I recall saying to someone... check that the CPU fans are working... I was told to mind my own business and thet the techies knew what they were doing... turns out... there was an issue with CPU coolers not working... dare I say it? I told you so.

Disclaimer: But please dont read this as a flame at GOA. I would put much more venom into one if I wanted to.

It's not even close, I've never seen a game before with even 1/5th the unscheduled downtime/connection issues of GOA.

I have seen several as bad and some worse - WoW servers were really flaky when I was playing it and the eve Tranquility cluster is so bad they are having to rush in new hardware to try and cope. In Eve you can come to a gate to jump to a new node and if that node is not active you have to sit there waiting until the server loads it. Imagine that - you rush past a pirate to a gate and you get the message - give us a second while we load your destination into memory :p?

Meanwhile the pirate rips your ship a new ass.

Never had any downtime problems in WoW for the time I played, didn't play Eve for long enough to judge though. EQ2, UO, Planetside, SWG, US DAoC don't suffer anywhere near the problems of Euro DAoC.

UO did also, but scheduled downtime is fine because a) It's usually at a time where you're sleeping or at work anyway and b) Because you can plan around it, i.e. if you know there's scheduled downtime at 5am each morning you don't plan a raid for 5am, whereas with unscheduled downtime it's a major problem in that you could lose something you've wasted hours doing or you could've put something off to play only to have unscheduled downtime and find you'd wasted your time.

Exacly. I rather have a reboot of the system everyday at 07.00AM and stable for the rest of the time then unstable every now and then.

Think SWG have daily maintanence aswell.
