When you did that pre-buy thing, it was with godaddy right ?

What Briannon might be suggesting is that if that isn't the case, GoDaddy might hoarding the domain name. It is surprising as presumably Tenpit is the named owner ... but I don't know how the system works :).

Also, there might be say a 1 week cooling down period after a domain name ends before it can be transfered.

Surprising on a board like this that nobody knows the technical details :).

Actually it's not that complicated. When a domain has status set to REGISTRAR-LOCK it simply means that no other registrar can transfer (or modify) the domain from the current registrar. This is primarily to prevent domain hijacking.

REGISTRAR-HOLD means the domain has expired and has been placed on hold awaiting payment. This status will usually last for 45 days in which the owner can renew the domain.

If the domain has still not been renewed after the REGISTRAR-HOLD period, the domain will change status to REDEMPTIONPERIOD which usually last 30 days in which the owner can renew the domain. If the domain is still not renewed after the redemption period, the domain will change status once again to PENDINGDELETE in which it's no longer possible to renew the domain. It will be purged within a week usually.

It's odd though, as Tenpit said he released the domain. It should have been available for purchase immediately after the expiration date. Would be quite annoying having to wait several months to get the domain back. :(

It would seem that the only way to get it transfered before months have passed is to get Tenpit involved. Persumably, if the old registrar requests the name to be transfered, they would do it much faster.

Anyway from godaddy.com faq pages (and a short summary at the end of the post)
QUESTION:

How do I change registrant of a domain name for free?
ANSWER:

Transferring the registration of a domain name will remove the domain name from your list of registered domain names and instead place it in the new registrant's account. To complete the change of registration process, the new registrant must follow the instructions sent to him/her via email.

To change the registrant of a domain:

Step 1:
Log in to the GoDaddy.com Account Manager.

Step 2:
Select Manage Domains from the Domain Names dropdown menu or from the Manage Your Account list.

Step 3:
Select the domain name you wish to modify by checking the box next to it, then click the Change Account button.

Step 4:
Next, enter the new registrant's information under the Registrant heading on the right side of your page and click the Save Changes button at the bottom.
The how to sell a domain info is more informative :)
QUESTION:

How can I sell my domain name registered with GoDaddy.com?
ANSWER:

Any domain name you have registered with GoDaddy.com can be sold or transferred to any party you wish. There is no charge for this process. The party who is receiving the domain registration must set up an account with GoDaddy.com.

Transferring the registration of a domain name will remove the domain name from your list of registered domain names and instead place it in the new registrant's account. To transfer the registration of a domain:

Step 1:
You must first login to your account.

Step 2:
Select Manage Domains from the Domain Names menu.

Or, click Manage Domains from under the Domain Names heading further down the page.

Sep 3:
Select the domain you wish to sell by checking the box next to it and click Change Account.

Step 4:
Type in the new registrant's information on the right side of your screen under the heading New Registrant Information.

Step 5:
Click Save Changes.

The NEW REGISTRANT will be notified by email with instructions on how to complete the process and assume registration of the domain name.
Basically, you can pass a domain to someone else. The person who is to get the domain name must create an account with godaddy.com first. Then the person who owns the domain name can use the web site to transfer the domain name to the other person. It also requires that the person getting the domain responds to their given email address (as typed by the old registrar).

It is likely to be alot faster than waiting for the back order thing. It would probably require that Tenpit re-register the domain name as it is in the cool off period (and probably pay for the year) and then transfer it to you. The yearly cost is something like EUR 10. It also has the added bonus that he could probably point the DNS to this server while the transfer is ongoing.

I was reading somewhere that although there is a process where a person can delete a domain name. However, it is very rare that the domain name registration agencies do it very quickly (as it requires manual intervention). Probably what happened was that Tenpit emailed them to say he wanted it released (which is probably the same as deleted) and they saw that it was about to lapse anyway, so they didn't do anything and are just going to let it go through the standard process of hold and then redemption period.

It is likely if they are doing registrar-hold that he could re-claim it .... though there might be an additional charge.

Yes, this is normal. Whenever a domain change to REGISTRAR-HOLD status, the registrar will usually renew the domain until payment from the owner is received, so no need to worry just yet.

It would be great to see some action on Tenpits end if at all possible to speed up the process, so if anyone who knows him could try and contact him on the matter that'd be great.

Tenpit had registered with godaddy too, so maybe you could also ask them if an email from the previous registrar can be used to speed up the process.
