just completed this excellent game - but i thought you could carry on playing after you kill Jack of Blades - is the only way to do this to pick up (and kill your sister) the sword he drops at the end? dont really wanna do this, but if it means i can carry on after then i will. anyone know?

you can carry on after you complete the game, and you don't have to kill you sister with the sword of Aeons, thats your choice. To do it you have to watch through all the credits which lasts about 30 minutes, but afterwards you can play as much as you want.
