windows help

Lo , the kids computer upstairs seems to have thrown a wobbly,when trying to boot it says the following,
"missing file windows root>\system32\hal.dll" please reinstall the file.
I have the windows cd but there is no cursor on screen to type anything with and if you press a key it just rebbots to same msg.
Any suggestions appreciated

You need to reboot from Windows CD, when computer starts you can press Delete button to enter BIOS, here you set the first boot device to CD-rom, then exit and save, then reboot and make it start on the CD.
If you are lucky you can reinstall file, had same problem, had to reinstall entire Windows without save of any files

have u tried a complete cold restart,
how far does it boot to.. meaning can u get to boot selection screen ?
other than that id plonk the xp disc in a use the repair feature.
