DNS server

seems that my ISP has messed up its DNS server (I can post here cos this prydwen.net's IP is cached (I assume)), anyone know the IP of a DNS server that I can set as backup ?

Here's Demon's:

Primary DNS server
158.152.1.58

Secondary DNS server
158.152.1.43

Looks like they block connections from non-subscribers (which I guess is fair enough

). On the plus side, my ISP's DNS server seems to be working again What I don't want to have to do is write down a list of IP addresses for when this happens.

194.168.4.100
194.168.8.100

are ntl's and open to all iirc

you cud also use the 13 global root servers, but best to set up your own dns server with a bunch of forwarders to a few decent isp's like bt, ntl, blueyonder then you have some level of failover plus all your faves will be cached on your own box.

I was trying to use the global ones ... do you need to link to all 13 ? Anyway will see if those work, thanks

iirc the root servers cant be used directly and they only resolve at the top level, like they would resolve microsoft.com, but not sales.microsoft.com or downloads.microsoft.com but they would send you in the right direction ie to microsoft (or rather their dns server?) so when I say use the root servers, "you" actually can't but "your" dns server can. but forwarders are better really, if you can enter a bunch then they will go do there thing, btw in advanced tcp/ip options you can enter more than 2 dns addresses

and yes they are well protected little beesties

192.168.* is reserved for internal network usage only. Only people from within that network will be able to use them

There are a few ranges like this :

Class Networks
A 10.0.0.0 through 10.255.255.255
B 172.16.0.0 through 172.31.0.0
C 192.168.0.0 through 192.168.255.0

I used to work for ntl as it happens and have been miss typing that network address for 5 years now

one of those errors i made off the bat and have never stopped making
