Petition against car tracking

This petition is for UK citizens only. The UK Government is thinking of taxing motorists according to how many miles they travel. The following is a link to a petition for those who object to such a scheme being introduced.

Yeah, god forbid people be taxed according to how much they pollute, everyone should be taxed the same so that those who only travel short distances foot the bill for those who travel miles by car!

eh we were speaking about this yesterday.

seriously QQing about what the government does really doesnt do anything. They proved they dont give a damn bout what anyone thinks when they called out the army during the petrol strikes.

I only wish they would put better public transport on.

Atm it costs me £25 per month to fill up my car with petrol.
To get to work on the bus it would cost me £3.40 per day
it would be cheeper to go into town and out again on the city service bus at £1.90 day traveller i think.
Either way BOTH journeys would be a heck of alot longer than the 15mins it takes in my car.

hem, but isnt it included already in the fuel price?
that's how it should work imo, and works in many countries...
u travel more, u buy more fuel, u pay more taxes...

It's not about pollution in this case, it's about how certain members of the public would be affected unfairly if the Government were to introduce car tracking laws to monitor where people are driving and for how far. What if you have elderly relatives who live many miles away? Supposing one of them falls seriously ill and you have to travel to them? Is it right that you should be charged say £1.50 a mile to go on that journey? If they lived only 20 miles away that's £60 including the return journey. Even if your relatives aren't ill, it's still unfair. What if your income is so low that congestion charges would mean you couldn't use your car, when the "fat cats" can easily afford it? It's immoral.

What about all those who have to commute? They weren't to know when they took up their jobs years ago that the Government would one day try to introduce taxation through mileage tracking. They can't suddenly give up their jobs because they can't afford to pay the tax, especially as good jobs are hard to find these days!

What about those people who live in isolated places and have to use their cars, because there is little or no public transport provision?

What about the disabled? Are they going to have pay such a tax too because they rely on the cars for mobility?

As for pollution, it's not necessarily the case that those who do more mileage cause more pollution. What about all those people who have cars that only do a few miles to the gallon? Surely they're causing more pollution travelling only a short distance than someone travelling say 10 miles in car that is very economical on fuel?

No, road tracking charges are not the answer and so far, over 1.4 Million people believe so to according to the petition. They can't all be wrong.
