I am assuming that this is absolutely necessary ... though, I thought I would ask .

After swapping out my motherboard for a new one, the screen goes black (and I think the computer crashes). I guess I should just reinstall ?

Yes, you should reinstall. Sure you can let windows change it's drivers automatically when you boot up - but you will still end up with loads of useless stuff on your pc and proberbly lots of problems too. So yes - reinstall.

Bah, it didn't help ... but I think I have it stable now (famous last words )

Bah, now it won't boot ... will need to do another reinstall .
