The other thing that puzzles me lately is devolution.
If the British Government is so keen on giving Scotland and Wales their own Parliaments, why are we moving further down the road every day towards a total European state, with a centralised European Parliament?
I have always believed that "locality" is the key to harmony. People like to feel part of a local community. This "locality" expands or contracts in either direction, but ultimately is as small as 1 person or as big as the Universe I suppose. 1 person is his own community, with a wife and children the community becomes a family, multiple families make up a street community, streets become a town or city, cities/towns a country, several countries a continent, continents a world, worlds a solar system, solar systems a galaxy, galaxies a universe.
See what I'm getting at? I think people in general feel comfortable with what they're familiar with, which on the whole means a country. So why are we trying to combine countries with different traditions, etc. into a federal state that will never be able to please everyone all the time? Let countries rule themselves, that's the answer. Variety is the spice of life. We can still be friends (most of the time). The future would be so boring if all the various European cultures became the same and there was no individuality.

.One issue is that the EEC was originally meant to be an economic free trade zone. This is a good idea as it gives better access to markets. It was not meant to be a federal state.
Things like tax harmonisation go against that competition. It creates a single monopoly tax policy. With the current system, tax policy is a way to attract investment ... or more to the point, the current system applies a downward pressure on taxes, high tax counties hate that

If I exaggerate a little bit, to make this example more obvious - imagine EU would sign an economic free trade zone with China, without changing their current economy politics - half of EU work force would stay home and play DAoC. Any foreign moves, that would destabilize your market are countered by import duties, and since you cannot use those inside the EU, you have to prevent other countries playing single-player game.

US - $40,100
US is 1/4 ahead of wealthiest EU countries and locking up in your small little community won't help you being invaded by McDonnalds - sooner or later.

Just as a quick piece of info on the rebate, I found this quite interesting (Courtesy of BBC)...
It seems that those who are probably the most punished by our rebate, Germany , Netherlands etc, wouldn't actually benefit as much from the rebate being abolished. The main beneficiaries are France, Spain and Italy. The same countries that gain by far the most from the CAP.
Personally I feel that the rebate isn't fair, however I think it does make
things fairer than if it didn't exist. The fact that some countries have also negotiated a reduced payment towards the rebate means that those left with a bigger payment are those that get much more than their fair share from the CAP.
Overall I agree with the UK government point of view. The rebate should be reviewed, but only if the CAP is reviewed too.
