There are many actors and actresses who play the same sort of character all the time. Look at Harrison Ford or Clint Eastwood for example. There's nothing shameful about that. "Character acting" is a recognised form of acting not only in cinema, but also on stage. I used to work in a theatre for a short period of time and there were several people I came across who classed themselves as "character actors/actresses", where they preferred certain roles and fitted into those roles very well. They would be employed time and time again, just because of that.

Jim Carrey's role is far too unique to be applied to many films though, the actors you mention fill a much more generic role. Even worse, I'd argue that Jim Carrey's unique role of the ace-ventura type isn't even a particularly great one - at least Clint Eastwood could playing his role well, Jim Carrey tries to be funny and all too often, just isn't.

The best actors are people like Johnny Depp, Sean Connery and Robert De Niro who have been in a range of films and have never really failed to deliver. Ironically, the actors who tend to be the best are the ones you tend to not recognise in a lot of films. It's the actors that make you say "Oh yeah, I didn't realise that was him/her in that film" that are the ones doing the best job by fitting into their role well! If you see Jim Carrey in a film, you just know it's him because he's just doing the same tiring old act pretty much every single time.

Steve Buscemi, Brad Pitt, Sean Connery, Robert De Niro, Clint Eastwood are excellent...and when it comes to comedy: Owen Wilson, Jim Carrey, Will Farrell, Steve Carell, Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller, John Cleese (and the rest of M.Python ofc)

If anyone of those appear its usually an entertaining movie imo.

Whilst Sean has the right image, he's hardly a "best" actor. Every film he does he has the same Scottish accent. Even when he played the Russian submarine commander in Red October, he still had the same Scottish accent, which didn't do anything for the film. He was the same in Highlander too. He just looks good, that's about it. But everyone defends him because he was the first 007.

If I had to choose a favourite actor in films, I would have to choose Christopher Lee. It's amazing how he could say so much in those Dracula films without actually saying anything... he just showed his blood-stained fangs and instantly communicated fear and terror with the audience.

Tim Curry is good too.

Sometimes not faking an accent makes the film watchable, I'd say Blood Diamond was a good recent example, I loved the film but the only bit spoiling it was De Caprio's fake accent - the film would've been at least as good or even benefitted from just going with his own accent.

There's a lot of films where the accent is miles off in that it's an American accent, the problem is that we accept this as the default accent in our films and hence when a non-American actor comes on, their accent stands out more and people tend to complain. It's a side effect of Hollywood domination in the mainstream movie industry. Ironically, I'd imagine if Sean Connery had faked a good American accent people wouldn't have picked up so much on it in The Hunt for Red October because they're so used to hearing it.

I know, it's a real shame. If only DeLoreans with flux capacitors were real, then he could go to a time in the future where his condition could be cured, then return to now and carry on doing films.

I am not sure if he would..Well...he might but only if he could bring the cure back for others.

Reading in his autobiography he was glad he got the illness.
It made him re-evaluate everything and realise his family and stuff were way way more important to him than other things.
He doesnt regret having it.
