Doesn't even sound like you're talking about IQ tests, where did you do these tests exactly on the internet or something? A proper and thorough IQ test really needs to be done both timed and by a professional psychologist or someone trained to understand people's method and results when answering the questions. Your description, albeit breif doesn't sound like that of a real IQ test at all, there aren't math questions as such, whilst some contain numbers it's generally about pattern recognition, also computer aptitude doesn't factor in whatsoever.Kallima wrote:Would be nice if IQ tests were set on that sophisticated a level. The best one I've seen was actually testing logic and computer aptitude. I'm afraid most tests boil down to the 100 multiple choice questions style. Some questions are too cultural. Some require a win or lose intuitive leap that could be pure luck. Maybe that sort of thing could be used to test creativity if someone was really cunning. Maths based ones may end up telling you more about someone's arithmetic than their IQ. Even the pure logic questions can have the inherent flaw that there is an equally valid logical answer that the person setting the test hasn't thought of at all.
Mind you, IQ tests can tell you some quite interesting stuff about the person who set the questions. <giggles>
Men more intelligent than women?

I only mentioned the computer aptitude test because although it wasn't supposed to be an IQ test, it seemed a better test of that than many.
Personally, I'm not sure a psychologist interpreting how someone does a test does anything but distort the data. I personally feel psychology has a long way to go before it becomes a science. And I emphasise that is purely a personal and subjective opinion before anyone throws bricks.
No these weren't internet tests, they were more than one style of test taken by large groups of people in examination conditions for different purposes but basically designed to test IQ. I'm afraid I have to plead the fifth amendment on this one, in that I don't want to give details that may incriminate myself. <grins>
I think the IQ test discussion has gone far enough, and I had better only discuss the weather from now on.

actually..
and being a female i can say this..
i actually agree.
I meet more intelligent males then i do females.
HOWEVER
those intelligent males can STILL only concentrait one one thing where as any female (even the bumb blondes) can multitask constantly and efficiantly
so in this day and age where you need about 5 arms to cope with life, women still come out best
also
i think possibly women used to be smarter than guys years back. i mean, who is the dumb one going out attempting to get killed where as their partner sits back and chills?

4 IQ points isn't even that much to worry about. Even if it were true it would mean that men are 4% smarter than women on average. I think trying to explain things like glass ceilings in employment due to a 4% difference is a little unreasonable.
Also, given how much research has probably been put into questions like this, it is likely that the difference if present is not major anyway. The inter-person differences in intelligence are way more.
This claim is arguably an implication that the study was not carried out correctly.

This should only be true for politicians. If you actually use statistics properly, then they can only be used to provide evidence for a conclusion. In fact, stats don't really prove anything, they just provide evidence for the conclusion.some university guy wrote: Statistics can be used to prove anything

no, it would mean men perform 4% better at IQ tests than women. IQ tests dont prove all kinds of intelligence. they were created as a basis for the Eugenics movement.Lairiodd wrote:4 IQ points isn't even that much to worry about. i don't have a sig.
By even it was true, I meant even if what they are claiming was true. They do say that men are smarter.Haarewin wrote:no, it would mean men perform 4% better at IQ tests than women. IQ tests dont prove all kinds of intelligence. they were created as a basis for the Eugenics movement.
I do agree that it is really a statement about IQ tests.

<grins> they did a test and the answer was no, but does that mean that murphy's law doesnt exist or that during the testing something went wrong.Kallima wrote:Actually I think there would be a lot of point to seriously testing murphy's law. If we can prove its true it tells us something very important and deeply worrying about the nature of the universe.
