Request for Information ...

Post by Ovi »

Background :-

This week I rebuilt my PC, and went to try and play some of my music purchases, however I had an issue getting my purchased music from MSN Music to relicence.

I went to http://msn.comand followed the music link, then tried to log in. Unfortuantely MSN.com uses Passport accounts, and the email address I had given MSN wasn't working as a passport account.

Whilst browing the help I found this. So I thought that's good, I can authorize my new PC and will be fine, if only I could get logged in!!

Then the penny dropped, I live in the UK... so off to http://MSN.co.uk I went. No passport account needed, so I could log in with the username I thought I had and all was fine, now to find the authorize page ...

So I found this page!!!

So if I'm in America I can, in effect, move the music between as many PCs as I like. In the UK I can only ever use it on 3!!! machines.... with every re-build counting as a new machine!!!!!! At my usual rebuild rates that means should have access to the music for about 4 years at the most!

The Request :-

If anyone from other countries has experience of MSN music sites, please could they let me know what the situation is with moving licences between PCs. I am curious to know how many countries outside the US are being treated as second class citizens (No I am not surprised tbh!)

How do they know what country you are from ? Haven't used the service, but surely you just create a US account?

Maybe more people will stop pirating MP3s and start buying music when they stop crippling the versions you buy like this :/
